Murcia, quick guide
What it is
Murcia is the municipality that serves as the capital of the Region of Murcia in southeastern Spain. The city lies on the banks of the Segura River and is surrounded by traditional irrigated orchards (the Huerta), an agricultural landscape that has shaped the local identity.
What to see
Historic centre with the Cathedral of Santa María, whose monumental complex and tower are prominent city landmarks. The Plaza del Cardenal Belluga and adjacent religious and civic buildings form the most visited historic core.
Museums and architecture: the Salzillo Museum, dedicated to the Baroque sculptor Francisco Salzillo; the Real Casino of Murcia, an emblematic central building notable for its eclectic interiors; and the Jardín de Floridablanca, a historic public garden ideal for a stroll.
Segura riverbanks and the Huerta: riverside promenades and surrounding orchard areas reflect the traditional agricultural landscape and provide pleasant walking and cycling routes.
Urban landscape and nearby sites: the Castle of Monteagudo, located on a limestone hill in the city's vicinity, is a distinctive visual landmark; various historic neighbourhoods in the centre retain streets and squares with active local life and tapas culture.
How to plan
The historic centre is largely walkable; bring comfortable shoes for cobbled streets and steps. The city has public transport connecting the centre with suburbs and nearby towns. If you want to combine urban heritage with the Huerta landscape, plan separate time for riverbank walks and museum visits.
When to go
The area has a Mediterranean, relatively dry climate: hot summers and milder conditions in spring and autumn. Spring is particularly pleasant for its mild temperatures and for the Spring Festivals, which include the Bando de la Huerta and other traditional events. Holy Week in Murcia, with processions in the historic centre, is another period of intense cultural activity. The Murcia Fair takes place at the end of summer and is also a lively local period.
