Introduction
The Basilica and Expiatory Church of the Holy Family, commonly known as the Sagrada Família, is a Roman Catholic basilica of Catalan modernist style located in the Eixample district of Barcelona. It is one of Antoni Gaudí’s best-known works, notable for its sculptural façades and an interior organized by branching columns that evoke a forest canopy.

What it is
Commissioned as an expiatory church funded by donations, construction began in 1882 under architect Francisco de Paula del Villar y Lozano with a more Gothic proposal. Antoni Gaudí took over the project in 1883 and redesigned it according to his modernist approach, applying inventive structural and decorative solutions. The building remains unfinished but holds national and international heritage recognition.

What to see and do
The Nativity Façade and the Passion Façade are the most celebrated external faces, each with distinct sculptural narratives. Inside, the inclined, tree-like columns and the colored light filtered through the stained glass create a unique spatial effect. The crypt, containing the earliest phases of the project, and the on-site exhibitions provide historical and technical context. The planned towers contribute to the vertical silhouette conceived for the basilica.

How to explore it
Combine exterior observation with an interior visit to understand how the façades relate to the internal volumes. Walk around the building to view different façades and sculptural details from several vantage points. Inside, note the structural logic of the columns, the geometric solutions, and the role of light in shaping the atmosphere.

When to go
The basilica attracts visitors year-round; tourism peaks in summer, while spring and autumn are generally less crowded. As an active place of worship, liturgical ceremonies can occasionally affect access.

Practical tips
Bear in mind that the Sagrada Família functions as a religious building and requires respectful behaviour and modest dress. Wear comfortable shoes for walking around the site and its surroundings. If you are interested in architectural or historical explanation, use the exhibitions and interpretive displays available on site. The construction has proceeded over many decades under different phases and architects, so the building’s appearance has evolved over time.
