Cares Trail
The Cares Trail runs through the Cares Gorge in the Picos de Europa, straddling the provinces of León and Asturias. It is famous for sections carved into the rock, including tunnels and walkways that follow the narrow canyon and offer distinctive karst scenery alongside the river.
The route traditionally links the villages of Poncebos (Asturias) and Caín (León), crossing stretches of vertical cliff where the path clings to the rock face. Notable features include rock-cut passages, short tunnels and bridges over the river that create the trail's most iconic views.
Regarding difficulty, the trail is generally well-marked and heavily used, but it includes narrow and exposed sections that call for caution. The path is popular in peak season; appropriate footwear and care in poor weather are advisable.
Access points are the villages at each end of the trail, which serve as the usual start and finish for the most common itineraries. The Cares Trail is within the setting of the Picos de Europa National Park and is one of the most well-known paths in the range.
